“The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a massive upheaval in human history.” Composers were encouraged to write songs, one of the most famous ones is called Le Marseillaise, the French national anthem. They also encouraged a new kind of opera, which told stories of heroes resisting oppressors. Rouget de lisle cluade-joseph, wrote the French national anthem. It was originally called “Chant de guerre de l’arme du Rhin” (War song of the army of Rhine). An example of French revolutionary music is “Gossec’s hymn for Themidor.” This and other songs had a big influence on the French romantic composer Berlioz.
One of the most famous paintings is the “Oath of the Horatti” by Jacques-Louis David, the “Painter of the revolution”. This painting represents a “bombshell”. The oath was “commissioned” by the king, intended to remind Frenchmen of their duty to the crown. You can see the “Sabine Women”. “The Horatti, three brothers, where chosen as the champions of Rome, to fight against the Curatti, champions of Alba, to determine supremacy of the one city over the other. “The women slumped in grief includes their sister, whose husband is the eldest of curatti.”The lesson: country over family. He also painted the death portrait of jean-Paul Marat who was stabbed to death by charlotte Corday in the bath tub.

The literature of a country is affected by how people in that country live.”Before the Revolution the citizens of France lived in a strict, confined society with no freedom to express their feelings.” They wanted a say in a stable government and a strong society. Eighteenth century literature was much like the society in which it was produced, restrained.” Eighteenth century writers focused on the lives of the upper class. These writers followed “formal rules.” “The revolution gave the common people and writers more freedom to express feelings and stimulated them to use reason.” Romanctism was a big change in literature and thought. “Thompson defines romanticism as a major literary and cultural movement that was inspired by the imaginations, inner feelings and emotions. Literature had a big impact in the French revolution.
