There were many results that came from the French Revolution, but the most important result was that the monarchy was overthrown in the revolution and as a result the middle class or bourgeoise had more power. They also became the most powerful social class in all of France. Feudalism ended and over half of France’s farmers now owned their own land. Many different reforms in education, administration, financial and legal reforms were made. The financial reforms made it hard for the economy to develop and grow. They gave France stability and made common people’s lives better. However, inaffective government allowed France to be easily conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte.
The French people were very proud of their country and this is called nationalism. Their army became stronger as a result and France conquered many countries. Other countries in Europe like Britain, Austria and Prussia were inspired to change their governments. Some experts think that the French Revolution may have even inspired countries as far away as the Americas to change their government.
The Catholic church fell out of power after the revolution, and France became a secular nation. The French government was more fair to non-Catholics as a result. The Church was resentful and shut down many of its hospitals and stopped helping the poor to protest. In 1847, there were 40 percent less hospitals than there were before the revolution. This was a negative result.
The French culture changed as well. Revolutionaries changed the national flag from the fleur-de-lis to the tricolore. The French calendar was changeed. Weeks became ten days, and there were 12 months of 30 days. Napoleon Bonaparte brought Western culture to France. This can be seen in both customs and fashion. French culture became unified, and more so did its clothing tastes. As a result, french designers such as Dior and Chanel dominate the runways even today.
